History of Malta
The Town of Malta was officially established in 1802 with the first town meeting and first ordinances established on April 6. The name “Malta” originated from the hamlet of Maltaville in the Southern end of Town, named as such in recognition of all the Malta Breweries in the area.
Primarily a rural and farm community, around the turn of the century Malta was the place where Tommy Luther began planting the beautiful “Luther Forest”, a 7,000 acres private forest preserve. In the 1940’s and 1950’s, Luther Forest would become a part of the nation’s space program, as the home to the Malta Rocket Test Station. This is where the rocket engines that carried America to the moon were first tested!
Malta grew through the second half of the 20th century from a small rural community to a small populated town as the Adirondack Northway made Malta a stop on the great post war interstate system. This allowed Malta residents to work in neighboring urban centers such as Albany, Schenectady, and Troy, but also aided in growing Malta’s population steadily.
In 2006, the Luther Forest Technology Campus in Malta was chosen as a located for GlobalFoundries, the home of the most advanced computer chip foundry in the world.
Today, with abundant parks and recreation, no local property tax, a vibrant workforce and community, and ample space for investment, Malta has become one of the attractive communities for business investment in the Northeast. Thanks for visiting this site to learn how #MaltaWorks!

Recent Timeline of Development
2006 - AMD (later GlobalFoundries) chooses LFTC in Malta for their manufacturing campus, investing more than $15 billion to build the largest greenfield fab campus in the US.
2008 - the GlobalFoundries Fab 8.1 campus construction begins and thousands of employees are hired.
2010 – GlobalFoundries ramps operations on the most advanced foundry in the world at that time.
2015 – Town of Malta updates the Planned Development District for LFTC, allowing broader uses and opportunities for business incentives.
2016 – Town of Malta begins extensive land use changes, updating traditional commercial properties at the request of residents to encourage investment and job growth. This includes large areas of NYS Route 67 West and US Route 9 North and South being updated to include commercial uses.
2017 – The Town Economic Development Committee is formed, bringing in expertise from all areas of business and government to develop recommendations for new approaches to economic development.
2018 – Town of Malta rescinds the recreation mitigation fee requirement for commercial projects, improving the cost of doing business in Town.
2019 – Town of Malta launches Malta Works, a new program to promote existing businesses in Town as well as providing economic development tools to encourage investment in the Town.
2019 – Town of Malta engages Saratoga County Prosperity Partnership to build a Next Wave Community Plan for the Town, merging past economic development approaches with new market realities and encourage job growth.
2020 - Mohawk Chevrolet announces they will build a multi-million dollar, state of the art dealership and corporate headquarters on Route 67 in Malta, creating dozens of good paying jobs.
